Movies began as a simple concept. In the beginning, the idea was to create a successive production of objects in motion. The earliest film developed for commercial purposes wasn’t really a movie at all, but rather a mechanism called a Kinetoscope that showed images of objects in constant motion. Once the process was further developed, the images were eventually joined and achieved visual movement.
Since then, the film industry has grown in monstrous proportions. For the first thirty years, all movies were silent with the occasional compliment of a musical background or comment from the showman. These films were seen in large auditoriums or theatres until the 1980’s when the VCR and video tapes were invented. The private, more personal experience of the VCR was closer to the original idea of the Kinetoscope, but obviously more advanced. As the sale and rental of films on home video became a profitable source of revenue for film companies, the idea of major stores such as Blockbuster came about. These stores grew exponentially along with the demand for popular movie rentals. Now, Blockbuster is one of the largest video rental stores in the world.

Theatrical performances have been around for centuries. The origin of performances has been traced back to early societies where stories were told through art such as hieroglyphics and cave drawings. From the myths and legends that were passed down and told from generation to generation, people began telling these stories by acting them out. Originally, it was the leaders or elders of a civilization that would perform and express the desired behavior of a society. This practice eventually became tradition and evolved into what is now known as theatre.
Ritualistic ceremonies paved the way for theatre, and were based off the notions of pleasure, duty, and power. Ceremonies were enacted to please the Gods and ensure fruitful crops for the civilization year round. Often, the Gods were portrayed as majestic or otherworldly beings by using masks and other embellishments. This rendering of dramatic events and emotions lead to the custom of modern day costumes and props. Could you imagine what they would think of all the costume makeup and special effects that goes into the movies and theatre today?
Dating back to Shakespearian times, acting has always been a way to entertain the masses. The dramatization of events and emotions has always succeeded in captivating audiences. Correspondingly, film making emerged through the popularity and intrigue of theatre. Even the widely recognized image of the happy/sad drama mask can be credited to these ancient practices mentioned before. This image represents the distinction between comedy and tragedy; the dramatic emotions that provoke all human reaction. Certainly, these traditions were the essential stepping stones to the modern movies that we are constantly entertained and delighted from today.
